About Port Charlotte
The roots of Charlotte County and Port Charlotte began to emerge all the way back in the year 1513, where the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon arrived in Charlotte harbor. At the time they named the water "Carlos Bay." Later in 1775 the English arrived and named the area "Charlotte Harbor" in tribute to Queen Charlotte Sophia, wife of King George III. It was only in 1921 that Charlotte County finally was established officially.
The first more organized roads to and from Charlotte was completed in 1928 where Tamiami Trail ran between Tampa and Miami where the name is derived from. Today Interstate 75 is the major trucking corridor for the Southeastern United States, where it provides direct access to Florida's major markets.
Charlotte County Airport is the areas general aviation airport in Southwest Florida and is host to the annual Florida International Air Show, a large event that draws thousands of spectators.
Charlotte County enjoys a semi-tropical climate and nearly perfects weather conditions year round.
